Cracking the Data Puzzle: My Journey into Energy Consumption Analysis

In the world of data analytics, some journeys challenge your skills while promising hidden treasures. This is my story — an expedition that started with a complex dataset spanning three years. It unfolded across 11 unique buildings in seven Nigerian cities, with meticulous records of water, electricity, and gas consumption, including unit prices for each year.

But beneath this treasure lay a daunting puzzle. The data resembled a scattered jigsaw puzzle with pieces from diverse sources. The urgency became clear amidst ongoing company restructuring, highlighting the need to organize and present this trove for informed decision-making.

Beginning: Wrestling with Data Complexity

Before delving into data visualization, I had to grapple with data complexity. First, I consolidated multiple Excel files into one, akin to assembling a colossal puzzle with pieces from different sets.

Microsoft Power BI became my ally, enabling data cleansing, preprocessing, and consolidation with precision. Power Query swept through the data, identifying inconsistencies and harmonizing information.

Building the Foundation: Relationships and DAX Measures

With data in hand, I established relationships and crafted DAX (Data Analysis Expressions) measures. Relationships formed the foundation, enabling intricate calculations.

DAX, my analytical tool, took center stage, allowing me to extract insights beyond mere aggregation.

Art of Visualization: Crafting the Energy Consumption Dashboard

Data visualization was crucial. The Energy Consumption Dashboard became my canvas, painting a vivid picture with bar charts, line graphs, heat maps, and pie charts. It transformed numbers into stories.
